How to Keep Your Baby Comfortable and Safe During Texas Summers: Tips for New Parents
Texas summers are no joke, and if you’re a new parent, navigating the heat with a newborn or baby can feel overwhelming. Between triple-digit temperatures and the blazing sun, keeping your little one safe, cool, and happy becomes a whole new priority. As a mama myself and the photographer behind Lama’s Littles Photography, I know firsthand how important it is to protect our babies from the heat while still making sweet summer memories.
Here are a few tried-and-true tips to help you and your baby thrive during the warmer months:
1. Dress for the Heat (and Keep It Simple)
Babies can’t regulate their body temperature like adults, so keeping their outfits light and breathable is key. Think soft cotton onesies, muslin rompers, and wide-brimmed hats for any time spent outdoors. A good rule of thumb: dress your baby in one more layer than you’d wear yourself, but skip anything bulky or synthetic.
Also, don’t forget the feet! Bare baby toes are not only adorable, they help with staying cool, too.
2. Avoid the Midday Sun
The hottest part of the day is typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you're planning a stroll, errands, or any outdoor play, aim for early mornings or later in the evening. Not only is it cooler, but the golden hour light makes everything look magical (hint: it’s my favorite time to photograph little ones, too!).
If you must be out, try to stick to shaded areas and keep a breathable cover on your stroller or carrier, just be sure it still allows for airflow.
3. Stay Hydrated (Even for Tiny Tummies)
For nursing or bottle-fed babies, regular feedings help keep them hydrated. You might notice your baby wanting to feed more frequently in the heat, and that’s totally normal. If your little one is eating solids, offer water in a sippy cup and cool snacks like puréed fruits to help them stay refreshed.
Watch for signs of dehydration: fewer wet diapers, dry lips, or unusual fussiness, and always check in with your pediatrician if you’re unsure.
4. Explore Safe Indoor Fun
Sometimes, the best summer adventures happen inside. Plano and Allen offer plenty of baby-friendly indoor spots where you can escape the heat while still making memories.
One of our favorite spots? Crayola Experience Plano. It’s colorful, creative, and a total win for babies, toddlers, and big siblings alike. We even shared our love for Crayola in Redfin’s roundup of top Plano summer activities—check it out 10 Fun Summer Things to Do in Plano, Texas | Redfin (Parent company of ApartmentGuide and Rent.) to see more fun local picks from small businesses like ours!
5. Capture Summer Milestones (Without the Sweat)
One of the best ways to embrace summer with a baby? Capture it! without breaking a sweat. At Lama’s Littles Photography, our Allen studio is a cool, calm retreat where your family can enjoy a relaxed, air-conditioned session designed just for newborns, babies, and growing families.
Whether it’s your baby’s first summer, a milestone session, or updated family portraits, we make sure everyone stays comfortable, and your memories come out beautifully timeless.
Final Thoughts
Summer with a baby doesn’t have to mean staying home all day (unless you want to, of course). With a little planning and a lot of grace, you can soak up the season while keeping your little one safe and happy.
And if you’re looking to document these sweet summer days, you know where to find us. 💛
Stay cool,
Lama
