Twin newborn babies resting together

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot in Allen, TX

  • Dressing the baby

Dress your baby in a single layer of clothing that is easy to undress, preferably a zipper or snap outfit (nothing that goes over the head). This will allow for seamless transitions between outfits and wraps during the session.

  • Gassy baby care

If your baby tends to experience gas discomfort, consider administering gripe water after consulting with your pediatrician. This can help alleviate any discomfort during the session.

  • Burping routine

If your baby spits up frequently, ensure that you pause during feeds to burp them more frequently. This can help minimize spit-ups during the session and keep your baby comfortable.

  • Feeding schedule

Feed baby upon arrival. A well-fed baby is more likely to be content and cooperative during the session. I will stop for baby feeds. Consider bottle-feeding if possible for the session. This will help in keeping the baby happy during poses. Pack extras! It’s not uncommon for babies to feed more than usual during sessions.

  • Warm bath

If possible, give your baby a warm bath approximately 2 hours before the scheduled session time. A bath can help relax your baby and prepare them for the photography session ahead.

  • Baby essentials

Remember to bring all essential items for your baby, including diapers, wet wipes, burp cloths, pacifiers, blanket, hair brush and any other items your baby may need during the session.

  • Baby Skin

Don’t worry if your baby has recently developed baby acne or flaky skin. This is normal for babies and there is no need to reschedule! Most babies I take pictures of have these things and it won’t affect your final photos. All these things can be edited including jaundice!

  • Including Siblings

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable newborn session, we recommend that siblings, especially those who are toddlers or younger, attend only the first part of the session. Once their portion is complete, it would be ideal for them to be taken on a fun outing, such as a drive or a trip to the park. This way, they won't get bored and potentially disrupt the session, allowing for a more relaxed and focused environment for capturing those precious newborn moments.

  • Family Photos

Family photos are usually done at the start of the session when there are other children involved. If the family photos includes only adults, it will take place at the end of the session. This will make for a better flow during the session and will allow for ample time for the baby-only portion of the session. Please plan accordingly.

  • Pack the Night Before

Packing your bag the night before helps ensure you don’t forget essentials. Lay out your own clothes too, especially if you're joining in photos.

  • Arrive Early

Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early to feed the baby and change any diapers. Arriving late will take from the scheduled session time.

  • Nourshiment & Comfort

If you’re nursing, consider bringing a pump to relieve any engorgement during the session, especially if the baby sleeps for long stretches or isn’t feeding frequently. It’s also smart to pack snacks and water for yourself; sessions can run several hours, and staying fueled keeps you feeling your best. Think easy, no-mess options like granola bars, trail mix, or fruit. Taking care of your own needs ensures a smoother, more comfortable experience for everyone.

Do you include pets or breastfeeding portraits?

There is always room for a feeding break while we care for your baby during the session. Breastfeeding portraits are not part of my offerings, and the Allen studio is pet-free, so pets aren’t included in studio portraits. If there’s a particular photograph you’re dreaming of, please tell me before booking. I’m happy to talk through what I can offer so you feel comfortable with your choice.

Can we include a meaningful blanket or family heirloom?

A special blanket or family heirloom can carry so much meaning. Send me a photograph or description beforehand, and we can look at its size, colors, and how it might be used safely. When it’s suitable, we can include it in part of your session without needing it in every photograph. Your baby’s comfort and safety will guide whether and how we use it.

How much do we have to plan, and how should we prepare siblings?

You don’t have to plan everything on your own. I’ll share preparation guidance and help with colors and clothing, and the props and preferences form helps me get ready for your posed newborn session. Tell me what matters most, including editing preferences, sibling ages, sensitivities, and comfort needs. Familiar snacks or a quiet activity can help siblings settle in, with no pressure to perform for the camera. I’ll guide family positioning and give them time to warm up. As you follow the preparation guide, keep responding to your baby’s usual feeding and comfort cues. Sleep and cooperation can’t be guaranteed, and we’ll work with the little personalities who arrive that day.
