A soft first birthday session with pastel balloons, florals, clean portraits, bubbles, and one very enthusiastic little cake smasher.

Pastels, florals, and a little first birthday personality.
For this little girl's Simply Baby cake smash session, her family came to our Allen studio from Princeton, Texas with a soft, colorful vision in mind. Mom wanted pastels, florals, and something playful without taking the attention away from her baby girl.
First birthday sessions do not have to be overly themed or complicated to feel special.
For this Simply Baby cake smash session, Mom wanted a pastel floral setup that felt feminine and celebratory while still keeping her daughter as the focus. We created the final look using butter yellow, muted purple, sage green, and pastel pink balloons, then added florals throughout the setup to tie everything together.
The finished palette was soft, cheerful, and perfect for celebrating her first birthday.
Starting With First Birthday Portraits
When she first arrived at the studio, she was understandably a little apprehensive.
That is completely normal for babies this age. A new room, a new person, studio lights, props, and a camera can be a lot to take in all at once. I never expect babies to walk into the studio immediately ready to perform.
Instead, we gave her a little time to look around and become comfortable. It did not take long before her personality started coming through.
Before bringing out the cake, we photographed two simple portrait looks so Mom would have more than just cake smash images from the session.
For her first portraits, she wore a sweet boho-style romper that gave us a softer, more organic look. For the second setup, she sat inside a white crib prop wearing the white dress Mom had chosen for the cake smash.
Using the same white dress for both the clean portraits and the cake portion helped create a cohesive gallery while still giving Mom a completely different style of image before things got messy.
A Pastel Floral Cake Smash Setup
Mom's vision for the cake smash was centered around pastel colors and florals.
We built the balloon garland using:
- butter yellow
- muted purple
- sage green
- pastel pink
Rather than using bright primary colors, the muted palette kept the setup soft and timeless. Florals were added throughout the scene to give it a slightly whimsical feel and help all of the colors blend naturally together.
For cake smash photography, I usually recommend a cake around 4 to 6 inches. It is large enough for a baby to explore and smash while still staying proportional to their size in photographs. This one was exactly the right scale.
She Was Ready to Smash
Once we introduced the cake, there was no hesitation. She dove right in.
She immediately started smashing into the frosting and exploring the cake with her hands, which gave us exactly the wonderfully messy first birthday photographs everyone hopes for.
Interestingly, she was much more interested in smashing the cake than actually eating it.
That happens more often than parents might expect. Some babies love the texture of frosting but have absolutely no interest in eating it. Others take one taste and decide they are finished.
Cake frosting can be very sweet, especially for a baby who is not accustomed to highly sweetened foods. That was exactly what happened during this session. Once she finally got a real taste of the cake, she was very much over the experience.
Adding Bubbles to the Cake Smash
Mom also brought bubbles to use during the session.
It was such a simple addition, but it created a really sweet feeling in the photographs. Bubbles are especially useful during baby and toddler sessions because they can immediately redirect attention and create natural reactions without asking a one-year-old to smile for the camera.
They also worked beautifully with the pastel floral setup. Between the balloon garland, soft florals, bubbles, and her white dress, the finished gallery had a playful first birthday feeling while still staying light and timeless.
What Is Included in a Simply Baby Cake Smash Session?
This family chose the Simply Baby collection, which is designed for families who want the session focused entirely on their birthday child.
It is a great option when parents primarily want portraits of their baby rather than family photographs during the session.
At Lama's Littles, cake smash sessions are designed to include more than the moment your baby touches the cake. We start with clean portraits whenever possible, then transition into the cake smash portion so the finished gallery has variety.
Every collection also includes a curated gallery of the best photographs from the session. There is no need to choose only a handful of favorites afterward or purchase a full-gallery upgrade. The strongest professionally edited images from the session are included.

A First Birthday Session That Felt Like Her
What I loved most about this session was how naturally her personality unfolded.
She arrived unsure about everything happening around her. Then she warmed up. She explored. She posed in her little outfits. She smashed her cake enthusiastically. She decided the cake itself was far too sweet.
Somewhere in between all of that, we preserved this tiny window of who she was right around her first birthday.
That is exactly what I want these sessions to feel like. Not perfect. Not overly posed. Just your baby, exactly as they are in this very short season of life.
